Midday open thread

  • Add Donald Trump to the list of Republicans whose candidacy would prove there is a God:
... in his bestselling book, Art of the Deal, published at the conclusion of the Reagan presidency, Trump cited Reagan as an example of someone who could ?con people? but couldn?t ?deliver the goods.? Trump said Reagan was ?so smooth? that he ?won over the American people.? But at the conclusion of his presidency, ?people are beginning to question whether there is anything beneath that smile,? Trump writes.
  • And speaking of the potential 2012 GOP field:
Less than half of Republicans are satisfied with their party's field of potential presidential candidates, according to a new Washington Post/ABC News poll.
  • When former homophobes go rogue:
Publicly, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has said they're not worried about Louis Marinelli -- the former employee who defected from the group and changed his viewpoint on same-sex marriage -- even writing that they "wish him well" with his "different focus." But behind the scenes, the president of NOM is threatening legal action against Marinelli and demanding he take down blog posts about NOM on his website.  [...]

In one April 13 email that Marinelli provided to TPM, Brown warned him that NOM was discussing options with their legal counsel and attached a copy of the confidentiality agreement Marinelli signed with the group.

  • Who could resist signing a book deal with her? You'd save a fortune on fact checkers:
A book deal could be in the works for Michele Bachmann.

Following a rally at the South Carolina statehouse Monday, the Minnesota congresswoman said she is "in the early talking stages" of doing a book. Bachmann, who told The Associated Press she's received several book requests, said she's considering whether she has the time to work on a book.

  • Will wonders never cease? Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a birther bill, saying:
... she could not support legislation that ?could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions? about candidates? eligibility for the presidential race, since Arizona?s secretary of state would be the single person to ultimately decide whether a hopeful?s documentation met the state?s standards.

?I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ?early baptismal or circumcision certificates? among other records to the Arizona secretary of state,? she said in the letter. ?This is a bridge too far.?

Of course chances are her veto will be overridden given that, "the bill passed 40-16 in the state House and 20-9 in the state Senate."
  • Meanwhile, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is itching to sign such a bill:
"It's not part of our package, but if the Legislature passes it we'll sign it," said Kyle Plotkin, Jindal's press secretary, the New Orleans Times Picayune reports.

State Rep. Alan Seabaugh (R) and state Sen. A.G. Crowe (R) cosponsored the bill, which was filed last week, and would require candidates to present a birth certificate before they could get on the state's ballot. Each candidate must prove their citizenship, age and residence through a birth certificate and a sworn statement of residence.

  • Do candidates always do this so early?
Sen. Rand Paul has already filed to seek re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2016.

The Kentucky Republican who has been talking about possibly running for president next year filed a statement of candidacy to run for a second term in the Senate on March 21, some three months after taking office.

  • How do people rationalize away scientific findings that challenge deeply held beliefs or ideological biases? Science writer Chris Mooney discusses why we don't believe science:
We apply fight-or-flight reflexes ... to data itself. .. Giving ideologues scientific data that's relevant to their beliefs is like unleashing them in the motivated-reasoning equivalent of a candy store.

  • In case you were wondering where the sodomites?legal and lawbreakers?are.
  • Sad news:
Grete Waitz, the Norwegian runner who won nine New York City Marathons and the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, died Tuesday after a six-year battle with cancer. She was 57.
