House to (re)discover balanced budget amendment ain't happening

BROKEN RECORD: The GOP always says it wants a balanced budget amendment.
But it will never pass. And this time won't be different.

As you might have heard, House Republicans will put a balanced budget amendment up for a vote next week. It's a silly gimmick, intended to show they are "serious" without actually needing to make any tough decisions, such as raising revenue. And their version of the balanced budget amendment is even worse than silly. Not even their own budget proposals would pass muster by their amendment's proposed rules.

Moreover, it's never, ever going to become part of the Constitution. To clear the House, it needs 290 votes, meaning 51 Democrats would need to vote for it. Even if it managed to get out of the House, it would need 67 votes in the Senate, meaning 20 of the 53 Democratic Senators would need to get behind. And then three-quarters of the states would have to ratify it. These are impossible hurdles for an idea like the balanced budget amendment. And that's exactly what the House will discover next week.
